Client Critiques

I had high hopes for this unit, but I will tell you up front, I have sent it back. Initially I'll tell you why I purchased it, and then what did not operate nicely.
I had to replace the existing failed in dash double din unit on my wife's SUV that had, amongst other functions: Radio, CD, DVD, iPod interface, Nav and Bluetooth telephone interface. The requirements for the new unit as dictated by my wife, in order of significance had been: 1. Bluetooth, 2.Nav, 3. Radio. If it could not do those 3 factors, forget it. If it could, every little thing else was gravy.
I scoured the net and retailers for several hours. From all the units that met my wife's specifications, I picked out the Pyle PLDD75BG primarily mainly because of the nice large 7 inch screen and reasonable price tag (compared to Pioneer and Sony at least). This unit is fairly new, and I couldn't obtain one particular review (very good or negative) on the web. I decided to take a opportunity and bought it anyway. Due to my experience, I am writing this assessment.
The installation of the unit was standard, but soon after that, issues immediately arose. Initial, on the Nav, there were for some cause, no Points of Interest (POIs) anyplace near my house. For instance, the nearest gas station was 100 miles away. Now I reside in the Los Angeles area and believe me, there are lots of gas stations by my residence. To make a long story brief, I figured out that the POI file on the SD card was missing a file for POIs in Southern California. Apparently, California has so quite a few POIs, that the POI file for California is divided into POI1 and POI2. POI2 has the Southern California POIs and was missing from the SD card for some cause. I Googled and identified a location on the web that has "repair" files for Nav systems, downloaded the Cal POI2 file, and this glitch was fixed. I most likely could/should really have gotten it from the manufacturer, but I'm as well impatient to wait for them to figure it out.
The next issue that arose, is that unless you are in Nav mode, no screen, such as the radio interface, displays the time of day, i.e. the clock. This is crazy. I by no means seen a unit of this sort that did not display the clock in most modes, and specially the radio mode. There is even a clock adjustment in the settings menu, but no way to display the clock anywhere except in the Nav screens. This drove my wife nuts given that her default display is the radio. She only utilizes the Nav when required.
The last problem (and the straw that broke the camel's back and forced me to return the unit) was the bluetooth. Despite the fact that we could hear callers fine, the callers could barely hear us more than interference and background noise. The preferred, and barely intelligible sound came with the auto parked, engine off, A/C off and windows rolled up. Anything else, and the bluetooth was useless.
We named each the seller and Pyle tech help. They believed it could be the phone, but we tried various phones, including a brand new iPhone 4 and Android, which all worked flawlessly on the OEM bluetooth in my Acura TL, but none of which worked nicely with the Pyle. I assume that the difference is that low end models such as this Pyle use a bluetooth "headset" protocol, though alot more expensive units (such as the Pioneer I ultimately ended up replacing this unit with) use the bluetooth "Handsfree" protocol. I noticed that all of the test phones reported a "headset" connection with the Pyle and a "Handsfree" connection with the Acura and Pioneer. It also helps to have a separate microphone (which both the Pioneer and my Acura have) that you can find away from A/C vents and the head unit whose cooling fan generates lots of noise. Nonetheless, I will say that the failed unit I had hoped to replace the Pyle with, had the same sort of built in microphone and it worked a lot superior than this unit, despite the fact that not as well as the units with a separate microphone. I recommend that if a bluetooth phone interface is essential to you, you go with a unit that has a separate microphone.
I will say this, I liked the Nav unit a lot. It worked rapid and had a good interface. The 7 inch screen was excellent and had fantastic clarity. The sound on the unit wasn't bad either. I by no means got around to testing the iPod interface. If you do not need to have a bluetooth phone connection and don't mind that the clock does not display except in Nav mode, this is not a poor unit. But a comparable unit with out the bluetooth would possibly be less expensive, so it in all probability does not make sense to get this unit if you do not want bluetooth.

I discovered the unit can not go from gps to radio. I had to turn off the unit totally and turn it on just before going back to the radio. That is a bummer. The directions says to hit the src button but does not work. I attempted just about every button and nothing operates except shutting down.
Shortly just after, the screen has fuzzy image right after installing the unit. I am not confident how long the screen will final.
Also there is no clock on the screen other than the gps screen.
Other than that, the functions perform okay for the price.
